I had the pleasure of seeing the New York premiere of choreographer Doug Elkins’ dance called Hapless Bizarre on Friday, January 9 at The Joyce Theater. I had seen his dance company at Jacob’s Pillow in 2012 when they performed Fräulein Maria, so I was expecting a bit of a romp. Thankfully, it was laugh-out-loud delightful. His talented company is a pleasure to watch for their vaudevillian antics in addition to their dance moves. Deborah Lohse especially stands out as much for her acting as for her dancing. The second dance, MO(OR)TOWN/REDUX, was every bit as theatrical, although it dipped into darker waters as it was a Motown take on Othello. I stayed after to hear Mr. Elkins speak briefly about his work, and he struck me as the intelligent trickster I imagined him to be. I wish I could have had a drink with him after. I am sure it would have been as entertaining as the evening’s performances were!
