The Death of Klinghoffer

I had a very thought-provoking couple of days of opera this week. It began with The Source by Ted Hearne and ended with The Death of Klinghoffer at the Metropolitan Opera. The subject matter of both made me very uncomfortable, and I am glad I saw these productions. I am a big fan of John Adams’ compositions and this opera, in that respect, did not disappoint. The choruses were especially moving, as was the humanism of the whole piece. I am glad the Met staged the production, and I wish the HD performances had not been pulled. I do not think this opera condones terrorism, but I understand that people will have differing opinions of the work. I am glad a forum like the comment section the Met created on their website exists for those differences to be expressed.
